Social engineering is a manipulation technique used by cybercriminals to trick you into taking a specific action or divulging confidential information without thinking. We’ve previously covered tips on how to spot phishing emails in the workplace by identifying some red flags to watch out for. Have you considered the content you share on your social media accounts, and how cybercriminals may use this information to target your organization? In this newsletter we’ll cover best practices for social media to keep both personal and organizational information safe.
Social media is a great way to connect with your friends, family, and colleagues. However, the public nature of it means that cybercriminals can see the information you share. Try to limit the amount of info you share about your workplace. Cybercriminals can leverage this info to find your work email address or phone number. Using this, they could disguise an email to launch a phishing attempt as one of your colleagues to try and deceive you. It is also recommended to review your privacy settings and limit the audience that you share content with.
Another security mindset is to think about non-work-related information that can be used against you. Seemingly innocuous details, such as a pet’s name or the street you grew up on, are common security questions used during login processes. Carefully think about the info you share before posting to be sure it can’t be utilized by cybercriminals.
Ensuring you Stop, Look, and Think before clicking on links you see on social media posts is also important. If you see a sensationalized news article or an offer that seems too good to be true, don’t click on them. These “clickbait” posts could lead to sites with malicious content or malware.
Tip: While browsing, make sure you don’t click on an ad that is disguised as a genuine news article. This is a common tactic used by bad actors to bypass social media content guidelines by taking advantage of automated ad review systems that may not filter malicious content.
